Projects - January 12

In looking for a specific tapestry needle this afternoon, I had reason once again to explore a gift a friend made for me years ago. It is a totebag specifically designed to be used for needlepoint or crewel embroidery projects, but I'll admit I've used it for any number of other handwork projects along the way.

The bag has some built-in features, like pockets made to hold scissors and a packet of needles, and sewn-in rings to serve as thread holders. My friend also made me a matching pin cushion which lives down in the bottom of the bag. Because it was for my use, she chose colors she knew I'd love (its main color is a deep, rich blue).

I have had that bag at least all the years I've lived here. I don't remember which Christmas she made it, but I'm sure it was before I moved into this apartment. And that's been a whole lot of Christmases ago. The bag has held up really well; it's still both useful and beautiful.

I love useful, beautiful things. That leads into thoughts of a few things I'm planning to make. First up is a sturdier, yet feminine, case for my cell phone. One that won't let the side of my handbag do some indiscriminate calling, yet will be a nice accessory. Most of the ones I've seen in stores are rather pretty, but they're sorely lacking in the sturdy department.

The one that came made to go with the phone is sturdy to the point of being stubborn to use if trying to actually access the phone in a hurry (which explains why several of my friends have had great chats with my voice mail). I have some ideas for this, and plan to work on it over the weekend, as I wait for yarn to arrive for my next ordered project.

This case, by the way, is not going to be crocheted. It will be done in needlepoint, using up some materials I have from earlier projects. I'll be glad to show it off when it's finished.

And of course, I'll get to use the needlepointer's totebag. It's all good.
