Rainy Darkness - March 16

Today we went from almost spring to very definitely winter again, with a cold rain to prove the point. And I'm not at all surprised; it's spring break hereabouts and we have a tradition of having lousy weather in Chapel Hill while the students are gone.

There's a spot on the road between the office and my apartment that's a little spooky on rainy nights, especially if the closest street light is not working. The spot is at an intersection, and coming from the office the approach to it is a slight downhill one.

If the street light is working, you can see that there really is pavement beyond the stoplight. If the street light is not working, it looks a little like you're driving into an abyss. Even if there are cars coming toward you, the angle is such that you can't see that there's pavement on your side of the road. It is just darkness.

Continuing through that intersection on rainy nights is made easier by having a memory of it from daytime travels. But even with that, it's a leap of faith.
