We got news at the office today that a young man (young as in just recently turned 18) whose mother is a friend of one of the attorneys was beaten and robbed over the weekend. We had all met the young man, and were stunned to hear of this. By the time his mother had a chance to let friends know, she had some good news. Her son is on the road to recovery, although he sustained very serious head injuries and has a long road ahead of him.

When the young man was able to tell police what had happened, it was learned that the crime was done by a friend of his. And that's the part that I can't wrap my own head around. How in the hell can anyone do that to a friend? What measure of stupidity, or drugs, or insanity, or viciousness does it take to assault someone so badly that the victim is left unconscious and not all that far from death? At what point does pure evil take over?

I think that may be one of the more unanswerable questions in the universe. It makes such things as whether there is sentient life on other planets seem trivial.

So a request of you. Please send prayers, thoughts, vibes, good juju, whatever you choose, to this young man and his family. And a thanks to the anonymous person whose call to the authorities got the young man the help he needed. Your good will sent out into the universe will no doubt counteract some of the ill will swirling.
