If anyone ever praises you for speaking like a Southerner, you've been paid a high compliment, indeed. We put a great deal of stock in the polite phrase, and we are particularly careful in the application of the snarky remark. I had occasion to praise a former Yankee for her excellent technique today. She has lived here long enough to know it was a compliment. She has known me long enough to know it isn't one given lightly.

We in this part of the world appreciate the careful choice of words. For example, we know the difference between saying, "I'm sure you know ..." and, "Surely you know ..." Now it is the case that either one can be an insulting comment, but the former is not likely to get you into trouble---since in it you're telling someone you give him/her credit for knowing something even if you've noticed he/she isn't acting on the information.

The second one usually means you're calling someone's knowledge and/or intelligence into question. Say them out loud...you'll probably hear the difference for yourselves.

I've mentioned the use of the word, "worried," before. There are two basic meanings of that one. One is the traditional---that something is causing you to be concerned, and you hope it gets better, etc.

The other meaning of it around these parts is basically the same as pissed off. Think of it as, "pissed off but willing to listen to and carefully evaluate excuses offered for egregious behavior." With this one, it helps to hear the inflection, but if you see it in writing, try putting it into Italics. If that doesn't work, then the person means the concerned sense.

Don't worry if some of this escapes you. As I told my friend today, learning Southern usually takes a lifetime.

There has been good news in abundance today. The first good thing I learned from Wendy. Then I read Bev's news. I am most pleased for all concerned.
