April 16

Today at work was a day to capture our wits, rest from tax season, and think about the future. For me, the workday began very pleasantly. Associate 1 had invited me to lunch, to celebrate the end of tax season. We had a good meal and a lovely conversation, during which the words, "ten-forty," were not spoken.*

Associate 1 is taking the next two days off to prepare for and be hostess to her in-laws. The timing was not her idea, but it could be worse: they could have announced that their visit would be last weekend.

One change at work is that Youngling will no longer be working with us. He had been hired for a specific time period, and the firm really didn't need his skills after the end of this tax season. He's a bright boy, and I hope he lands a more permanent job soon.

Today was also a lovely day to enjoy the spring. Different flowers and trees are in bloom, and the weather was warm and sunny. It was not always easy to stay indoors, but the prospect of moving the heavier furniture outside was even less appealing than only enjoying the sun through the windows.

All in all, it was a good day.

Of course, for me April 16 will probably always be a day to think of this event, and to remember how difficult a day truly can be. But as with most learned things, the information I learned that day has served me well. I recently had reason to share a bit of it with a friend who was embarking on a similar journey. I was glad to be able to put it to good use.

*For the benefit of those outside the United States: Internal Revenue Service Form 1040 is the major form used for personal income tax returns.
