January 15

Greetings from one of the spare computers in Beckyland. The main computer needs to go in for service. It's being a bitch (how's that for a technical term?) and needs more work than I can do.

The one I'm working on tonight is the one Wendy gave me several years ago. In terms of age, it's the oldest one in the dormitory. And the most reliable, at least at the moment.

It's been a busier-than-planned week so far. I think part of it is that we are perhaps in for another bout of frozen precipitation on Friday, and we're all rushing around to get things done before that happens. This one is supposed to be more snow than ice, which sounds good to those of us who are still trying to get ourselves reorganized after losing the week last month. I suspect the power company crews think snow sounds pretty good, too.

The State (of North Carolina) Utilities Commission had a series of public hearings asking people to comment on the power companies, specifically about their performance during the aftermath of the storm last month. The series has just been completed this week, so the report isn't out. But the companies are already planning one really sensible thing: they will wait twenty-four hours after a major power outage before issuing predictions as to how long it will take to restore power. That may well help their credibility, which is somewhere below basement level just now.

Me, I'm just hoping they don't have to show off their new and improved ways of dealing with major outages again this winter. Especially not this weekend.

Happy third journal anniversary to Doug.
