In the end, it was the right thing. She had to leave. But the process has been stressful. That stress is the reason most entries I've written here this month have been short, and many of those were insubstantial.

The younger associate at the law firm had been an excellent choice for the firm, when she joined it. She worked well with the senior partner, and seemed to think along the same lines he did. Nearlty all the cases she was working on were his cases, and in most instances were for long-term clients of the firm.

But during the summer she changed. I'm not sure exactly when, or what it was that caused the change. It may well have been the addition of another associate to the staff, or it may have been some cause external to the firm. I am sure there was a definite change in her. There was a certain stridency in whatever she said. Nearly every sentence, including, "I'm going to lunch now," was issued as though she expected an argument.

And rather than working well with the senior partner, she seemed to be constantly at odds with him. All of a sudden, she seemed to decide that his judgment was completely wrong, no matter what they were discussing. I witnessed one of their discussions, and was appalled at the attitude she exhibited. The senior partner was much more patient with her that day than I would have been; he merely sent her away to do some research---knowing that his point was accurate, which it was, of course.

The tension she was creating was getting to all of us. She was warned that her behavior was getting out of hand. She did not heed that warning, or chose to heed it in a different way than many would have.

I particularly dislike this sort of drama, and was glad its concluding act had played out before I got to work on Friday. She chose the ending, and I think it was for the best.

Wendy's take on the situation.
