July 18

The week is going well around here, but it's so busy I've barely had time to think.

A couple of etiquette points here, courtesy of my having witnessed a couple of people making asses of themselves earlier this week:

---when someone does you a favor that solves a minor emergency you're having, say thanks, then shut up if the people doing the favor don't behave exactly as you'd have them do so. As in, don't whine. Particularly don't whine in public about it. Doing so makes you look like a boorish ingrate.

---if people are merely trying to make polite chitchat, even if they do make stupid comments (like, "Oh, you're still sick!"), let it go. Accept it as intended politeness, and remember not to say the same thing to someone else. Most of us do not know what to say when the situation is one we're not used to dealing with, and will occasionally come out with stupid remarks.

No, I have not been the favor-doer nor the remark-maker in the above two examples. But I have witnessed the two above-mentioned people making asses of themselves by responding to kindness or politeness with sniping, and it bothered me. Both people should have known better.
