April 30

I've realized again that if you try hard enough, you can make your point seem proved. Tonight's example comes courtesy of the same group I was ranting about the first of the month. Again, for search engine purposes, I omit the name. But this time I'm not ranting.

Tonight's batch of e-mail brought a note from the man who had suggested the new and improved links texts (that turn out grammatically awkward). He had taken the moments necessary to search on you-know-what search engine for the words those who had followed his lead had used in their links. Sure enough, they were all up toward the top of the lists for their respective categories. Trouble is, the words are not necessarily words anyone searching for the products would use. Ah well. Those whose links terms he searched are ecstatic.

But something I know is that pure dumb luck will get you high ranks on that particular search engine. That one's bots pay careful attention to all the words they find on a page. I've written before about all the hits I get from people looking there for information on starting porn sites.

Depending on how the searcher phrases the request, I'm anywhere from number ten on up to number one. I guarantee you that none of the people I know of who have linked to this site have phrased the link, "porn site-starting information is available at Becky Says...."

I can test this dumb-luck thing, rather easily. I'll toss the phrase, "peanut butter fizzlepops," in right here. A few weeks from now, after the bots have made their next crawl, I can search for that phrase and find it being used on this very page. So can you. I suspect we will all find it in the number one position. Why, we'll probably even be offered a chance to look for information on peanut butter fizzlepops at an online bookstore!

Of course, following tutorman's logic, I would need to ask all those linked to me to change the link text to reflect the number-one rank. Don't worry; I won't do that. Not even in his wildest dreams.
