Scams

A scam campaign has been started, telling voters that the upcoming election is being divided over two days. One party is supposed to wait till Wednesday to show up at polling places.

North Carolina voters are apparently being targeted because we have had the option this year of voting early using the "No Excuses" plan. The thought is that scammers must believe we'll fall for the notion of voting late, too.

And another scam is being targeted at women. They're receiving phone calls or e-mail messages telling them that since so many women registered to vote this time, women are being asked to vote on a separate day.

Gee---can you see the potential overlap problem? What if a woman whose party affiliation makes her a Tuesday voter is subsequently told her gender means she isn't supposed to show up that day after all?

I could go into a rant about people who perpetrate scams, but I suspect I'd be preaching to the choir, so I'll spare you.

I'm happy to report that many of the women in North Carolina who have received such information have called the Board of Elections to report the scam. I'm also happy that the scammers decided to get a head start and not wait till Monday, when fewer people would have a chance to check and when there would be fewer chances for news organizations to spread the word.

For the record, in case you have any doubt: there is not going to be late voting in North Carolina. If you haven't used the early voting option, your only chance is on Tuesday.
