Seams - January 8

In terms of work, the absolute best thing about today was getting a tapestry needle threaded with the help of a bit of tape. I know that's not an original idea of mine, but I hadn't used it. Instead, I'd been using a thin wire needle threader and the power of positive thinking.

Positive thinking is always a good thing, but wiggling a piece of stiff yarn through a needle eye with a needle threader is a pain in the fingers because the yarn is doubled by the threader. Getting the threader and the doubled yarn through the needle's eye takes determination, especially in terms of not breaking the wire.

Softer yarn either doesn't need any help going through the needle eye, or will cooperate with efforts to squeeze it to work with a needle threader. Today's project was using a stiffer yarn that wouldn't go through the needle eye on its own, either.

Okay, I know about two-thirds of my readers are asleep by this point, but I'm going to finish the thought anyway because this trick made my work so much easier. To do the tape thing, get a small piece of tape, put the end of the yarn at one edge of the tape, then fold the tape in half.

This makes the tape version of an aglet, that hard tip on the end of a shoelace. The taped yarn will then slide through the needle eye quite easily. Remove the tape, and stitch to your heart's content.

And getting this little miracle of the tape and the yarn to work meant I could do the seams on the piece I was making without taking more time to thread the needle that the crocheting had taken.

Pictures and more information (without how-to geekery!) soon.
