Animals - October 20

Some friends of mine adopted a kitten this summer. The kitten had been in an unpleasant encounter earlier in his kittenhood, and had lost an eye. So they decided his name would be Jack.

Just this week they have added a young dog to the household. They were discussing names for her, and she happened to be in the room. They thought of and rejected several different names.

The dog didn't react to any of the names as they were mentioned, until one of the couple popped out with, "Jill." At which point the dog raised her head as though she had been just waiting for these silly people to call her by the right name.

So it comes to be that Jack and Jill are living in Orange County. I don't believe there are any hills on the property.

Today on the bus an acquaintance was discussing scams. He announced that he had the perfect one in mind, but would have to wait to start it because the deadline had passed. I said I didn't realize scams had deadlines, and he said they don't unless you're applying for a grant.

The man went on to describe the scam, which would be to apply for funds to study the effects of extermination efforts on the population of a certain kind of ant.

He said that in light of some of the grants that had been recently approved, he suspected he could not only get the money, but could also perhaps get the ants on a watch list for potentially endangered species, since there were none currently residing in his home.

Yes, he was joking. We think.
