September 12

I went this afternoon to see TeKay in a production of The Misanthrope. It was the first time I've had a chance to see him onstage, and that was a treat. If you're on his mailing list and got today's message, you already know that he's enjoying being in this play. It's always fun to see friends do the things they enjoy. (And if you're not on his list, follow the link above to sign up for it.)

It's also nice when a memorable production has a full house. There may have been two vacant seats for the matinee today, but there weren't three. I understand that's been the case for much of the run. The theater company is a relatively young one, and I'm glad to see them doing so well. Chapel Hillians can be a tough audience for arts.

Part of why that's true in Chapel Hill is that there are many venues from which to choose. Another part is the diversity of the population. Many people think only of the university when they think of Chapel Hill. While it is a major force, it is by no means the only thing in town or the surrounding area. In addition to those who live here and work somewhere other than the university, we also have a fairly high population of retirees.

And many of those people, university and otherwise, are arts-savvy consumers. Which is why the arts venues hereabouts compete and cooperate and do their best to deserve their patrons' good will. And that makes this area a wonderful one in which to be part of an audience, on any given day.

Like today. And I can tell you that the people in this audience definitely appreciated the efforts.
