Congratulations to and blessings upon David and Mark on the occasion of their marriage today! I am delighted for them, and wish them much joy. No, that's not their wedding picture. It's adapted from one David took three months ago, for my birthday. David and Mark were married in San Francisco. And you know something? If some group afraid of the whole notion of letting people who love each other marry legally manages to get the courts to agree that those licenses and ceremonies granted to and performed for lesbians and gays weren't legal, well, those marriage ceremonies will still be a wonderful, joyous thing. This is a time when history is being made. Too many people are involved in it for it to lose steam. And too many others of us are aware of the cause and supporting it. And on a related topic: I've seen several comments recently about how we should abolish use of the term, "married," outside the church, and just let civil unions take place. I don't agree. Words are way too important. To attempt to deny the social status associated with marriage to any couple whose union isn't church-sanctioned is just wrong. And, for the record, following that only-in-a-church idea and going back to 1952, then you'd have to say my parents weren't married, because their ceremony was performed by a Justice of the Peace in South Carolina. So marriage it is and marriage it should stay. And I'm going to end this and go on to think of happier things than impending court challenges. Like wedding presents. Photograph copyright 2003 David
