July 30

I hadn't planned to write more about odd searches tonight, but I have discovered that some people are fascinated with furniture purchases and can't figure out how to work a search engine.

Here's a hint: if you're looking for the website of a company, and you're using Google, put the company's name in quotation marks. Unless, of course, you really want to get sent to the wrong web pages.

Twice in the last twenty-four hours, according to my referrer logs, someone has wanted to find out information about furniture purchases. In both cases, the searcher got to this page, which is the second page of archives for July 2002.

The first search was for a company, "Rooms to Go," with the searcher apparently wanting a directory of the company's stores in Texas. And on that archives page of mine, you'll find all of those words: rooms, furniture, Texas, etc.. But they're not there as a phrase. The use of quotation marks at least around the company's name, would have saved someone a lot of scrolling!

The second searcher wanted information about buying furniture in foreign countries. Again. all those words in the search string are on the page. but not in any way that would be useful to the searcher.

Of course, for me, the lack of quotation marks has meant journal fodder. And if you want to read my archives instead of getting the information you started out in search of, hey---be my guest!
