My heart tonight is with Saundra and her family in the death on Saturday of her grandmother. This is a lovely tribute.

Mark has written a very thoughtful essay on hate crime. My own thoughts on the subject are that while some crimes are indeed caused by hate, it is much, much more difficult to prove that hate than it is to prove, for instance, that someone has committed an assault. I would have legislatures strengthen penalties on all assaults, rather than have them enact legislation calling for a determination of hate in addition to a determination of guilt.
